The Upmarket Kia Sportage

The All New Kia Sportage looks more distinctive, is more spacious, and looks and feel more upmarket compared to the previous model.

The Sportage is up against strong competition that includes the Nissan Qashqai, Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV, Mazda CX-5, Ford Kuga and Hyundai Tucson.

I just love the interior, the quality is almost “German” like and as mentioned before, space is not a problem. Seating is really comfortable and there is a bit more space for the rear passengers. The plastic’s used in the interior as also of good quality. The entry level model, the Ignite, comes with black cloth upholstery, while the EX, SX and range-topping GT-Line get leather.

The Sportage is definitely better to drive than the previous model, a few upgrades to the suspension. Small SUVs don’t need to be especially sharp to drive, but it’s no bad thing that the Sportage keeps its body lean neatly controlled through bends. It certainly stays more upright than some of its rivals.

The Sportage comes packed with goodies. The base model includes two USB ports (front and rear), Bluetooth, a basic CD frontloader, steering controls and rear park-distance control. The EX includes rain-sensing wipers, cruise control, front-park sensors and an electric handbrake.

The boot space is not bad as well, Kia claims:
Boot space (rear seats up) 503 litres (491 litres AWD models)
Boot space (rear seats folded) 1,492 litres (1,480 litres AWD models)

The Engine lineup:

114kW/192Nm naturally-aspirated 2.0 petrol
135kW/237Nm naturally-aspirated 2.4-litre petrol
130kW/265Nm 1.6 turbopetrol
130kW/400Nm 2.0 turbodiesel

The Model lineup:

  • 2.0 Ignite
    2.0 Ignite Plus
    1.7 Ignite
    2.0 EX
    2.0 EX Plus
    2.0 CRDI EX
    2.0 CRDI EX Plus
    2.4 GDI SX AWD
    2.0 CRDI SX AWD
1.6 T-GDI GT Line AWD DCT

All Sportage models come with five-year/unlimited mileage warranties and five-year/90 000km service plans.

My pick of the bunch would be the 2.0 CRDi EX, its economical and powerful at the same time.
The Kia looks great and is a pleasure to drive. I am sure it would sell well.
